Compost Project
After attending a teacher workshop entitled "Go green!" this summer, I decided to create my own compost bin. A compost bin allows me to accomplish several things. It gives me a place to dump my organic garbage, which means less of my garbage ends up in a landfill. The compost also creates really rich soil, that I can turn around and use in my garden! The rich soil produces healthier crops, therefore yummier vedgetables and fruits for my family's enjoyment! The pictures and captions below show how I made my bin. Its was very easy and inexpensive to do!
1. Obtain a plastic storage bin with lid.
I used the cheapest plastic storage bin I could find at Walmart. Depending on the amount of organic trash your family uses, select a size that works for you! I chose the medium sized bin.
2. Obtain (with parent permission and blessing) a drill with a rather large bit.
Small holes are okay if placed close together, but large holes can be made farther apart. Holes are needed so oxygen can reach the contents of the bin. This allows for decomposition to occur.
3. Drill holes in all sides of bin and in the lid.
Holes in the bottom of the bin allow water to drain appropriately. If too much water gathers in the bottom of the bin, molding can occur. Molding will ruin your compost!
4. Fill with organic material and keep moist.
Fruit scraps, peels, seeds, veggie scraps, peels, seeds, coffee grinds, egg shells, paper, and many other items can be used. Research other materials, but never use animal fats or meats.
Keep material moistened with water.
Stir contents every few days as well.
Shovel soil into flower beds, pots, and gardens and enjoy!
